Cavitation and Bubble Dynamics

Cavitation and Bubble Dynamics9e3Wg-gd
Preface
Q5dg7t}iq This book is intended as a combination of a reference book for those who workXpx1jn
with cavitation or bubble dynamics and as a monograph for advanced students-S,e]!e?"af
interested in some of the basic problems associated with this category of multiphasea@+iL P5KzTi7Hd
flows. A book like this has many roots. It began many years ago when,
?(O7bo8? as a young postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology, I wasO;Z?4P"_*v5|1s`I.t/]
asked to prepare a series of lectures on cavitation for a graduate course cum seminar
/^ z ?5K/dp})_ series. It was truly a baptism by fire, for the audience included three of the
f K8J'hM great names in cavitation research, Milton Plesset, Allan Acosta, and Theodore _lE0I&V$WP#Bq6w'?.a ~
Wu, none of whom readily accepted superficial explanations. For that, I am
3KAc e[.py2H+z immensely grateful. The course and I survived, and it evolved into one part of
R;uX]nhh)h a graduate program in multiphase flows.
7pf/l;CH:hzP There are many people to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for the roles they
0kBoK.^{K$j&_ played in making this book possible. It was my great good fortune to have
n\&x0Gm`7A known and studied with six outstanding scholars, Les Woods, George Gadd,
{8\B g0|!| Milton Plesset, Allan Acosta, Ted Wu, and Rolf Sabersky. I benefited immensely
` B r\E+O2dg2G from their scholarship and their friendship. I also owe much to myc8b+hd8{0V2q b `(?
many colleagues in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers whose insights
~o6n+Y~#~'t~ fill many of the pages of this monograph. The support of my research
%a*V'H%`)?4A'R_,c program by the Office of Naval Research is also greatly appreciated. And, of
O_~}gy course, I feel honored to have worked with an outstanding group of graduate7]5{F#wyE/d0|
students at Caltech, including Sheung-Lip Ng, Kiam Oey, David Braisted, Luca9t8T5h*@5wq:x6W0r&i)r
d’Agostino, Steven Ceccio, Sanjay Kumar, Douglas Hart, Yan Kuhn de Chizelle,$}\{9g?P
Beth McKenney, Zhenhuan Liu, Yi-Chun Wang, and Garrett Reisman, all of3d tQ5e:MY/E(qF
whom studied aspects of cavitating flows.A+b sp ~f;Y
The book is dedicated to Doreen, my companion and friend of over thirty AR^il
years, who tolerated the obsession and the late nights that seemed necessary to/Y4P[Q ^9I.miC}
bring it to completion. To her I owe more than I can tell.
