SHENZHEN: Construction got under way yesterday on the country's first 1,000 megawatt-level, domestic-built nuclear power plant in the city in South China's Guangdong Province.
&AEK)y,R$Gi^k The cornerstone-laying ceremony for Ling'ao II was led by Zeng Peiyan, the vice-premier of the State Council, and Zhang Dejiang, secretary of Guangdong Committee of Communist Party of China.
-? R%y7O4k(h8l According to sources of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Co Ltd (CGNPC), the Ling'ao II project will feature two generating units, each with an installed production capacity of 1,000 megawatts. The first unit is scheduled to start operating in December 2010 and the second in August 2011.
"Q4Z+@Bjp8P)C They will generate a total of 150 billion kilowatt hours every year.
(K"Q!m8Y{+] I Chinese companies have taken a larger role in the power plant's construction than in previous nuclear projects, according to CGNPC. ib#j&o9`Cb5L
Ling'ao II is based on China-reformed pressurized water reactor technology. CGNPC spent more than 20 years to develop the technology, which is derived from France. 2A2z}1]3k.z
Ling'ao II, one of the key projects of the National 10th Five-year Plan (2001-05), is the third commercial nuclear power plant in Guangdong, where China's first - Daya Bay nuclear power plant - began operation in 1991. A9P6__? [*w
It will be become the country's seventh in total. Another four are in Qinshan, East China's Zhejiang Province.

T@3N"nU The construction of a nuclear power plant in Yangjiang, a port city in south China's Guangdong Province, is expected to begin early next year, said Zhong Yi, vice mayor of the city. {,Nt4v:V
It will be the largest nuclear power plant in China.
;G:Tf(fvX:Bh2\ The plant will have six reactors with a total installed capacity of six million kilowatts and a budget of 80 billion yuan (about 9.86 billion US dollars). g aqRw]%t(|
According to Zhong, 93 percent of preparatory infrastructure for the the plant, which was approved by the State Council, has been completed.
r*?eJ!OU7V International bidding for plant equipment supplies was announced last September and remains open.
A(^^%x0_ b So far, a dozen international nuclear power giants have placed bids. Winners of the bidding will be chosen and announced before the end of the year.
;j-X*OlVH China currently operates nuclear power plants at Daya Bay and Ling'ao, both in Guangdong Province, and Qinshan, in eastern Zhejiang Province, and has been building a fourth one at Lianyungang, in east China's Jiangsu Province.

The Ling'ao Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong Province, south China, will soon become the third commercial nuclear power operating in China, as its owner the Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, has recently signed a contract to supply electricity to the Guangdong Power Group.
'KR*k2r9U5o i6^f Under the contract, the Ling'ao nuclear power plant, situated at Daya Bay near Shenzhen, will supply 13 billion kilowatt hours of electricity a year to the provincial power grid, equivalent to one tenth of Guangdong's annual power consumption.
2s2TlX)K7iA m The plant has two generating units, each with an installed capacity of one million kilowatts.

China currently has two nuclear power plants in operation, the Daya Bay plant only one kilometer away from Ling'ao, and the Qinshan plant in Zhejiang Province on the eastern coast.0[zT(kv}|
Other nuclear power projects under construction in China include the second and third phase of the Qinshan plant and the Tianwan plant in Jiangsu.]H2^%M vpO$x{+~
Preliminary work has also begun on the Sanmen nuclear power plant in Sanmen County, Zhejiang Province, according to earlier media reports.

This is the first generating unit that has started a trial operation and the nuclear plant operator has taken over the responsibility for nuclear security.
VY#hl(ei-b&Y Construction of Ling'ao began in 1997. It is the second largest commercial nuclear power plant built in Guangdong, following the one on Daya Bay, and was one of the major power projects in China for the 1996-2000 period."Kg:N'bR#JZ
According to the construction plan, four nuclear generators with a combined generating capacity of one million kw, will be installed at the plant. For the first phase of construction, two nuclear generators will be installed at the plant at a cost of four billion US dollars.
'W5e6r#s'Y2Hc)Nn UwJ The first and second nuclear generators will start commercial operation in July 2002 and March 2003. The electricity generated will be brought into the local power grid in Guangdong Province, one of the country's economic powerhouses.
0j0r5D%?ST @vC At present, four nuclear power projects are being built in China. The other three are the second and third phases of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in east China's Zhejiang Province, and the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, a Sino-Russian joint venture, at Lianyungang on China's east coast.
